Ubuntu Core 24 by Canonical: The Future of Embedded Devices and Edge Computing

On 4 June 2024, Canonical has unveiled Ubuntu Core 24. It is the latest stable version of its official Ubuntu flavor which is specifically optimized for IoT, embedded, and edge devices. Ubuntu Core 24 is a fully containerized variant of Ubuntu 24.04 LTS Noble Numbat. It introduces a fully preemptible kernel to ensure time-bound responses and enable advanced real-time features out of the box on Ubuntu Certified Hardware from Canonical’s partners.

Key Features of Ubuntu Core 24

Ubuntu 24 Core ships with new integrations and features for GPU operations and graphics support. Here are some key features:

  • Validation Sets: For creating custom Ubuntu Core images.
  • Network Control: Greater control over automatic network requests.
  • Offline Remodeling: Enhanced capabilities for offline usage.
  • Improved GPU Integration: For AIoT and graphics applications.
  • Ubuntu Frame Support: Canonical’s secure display server for embedded Linux.

Additionally, this release introduces new device management integrations with Canonical’s Landscape management tool. Also, it supports Azure IoT Edge snaps which facilitates seamless integration of Ubuntu Core devices with Azure IoT Edge services. For robotics developers, there are new integrations with the Robot Operating System (ROS) for modular deployments.

Ubuntu Core 24 Now Available for Download

You can now download Ubuntu 24 Core from the official website. It’s supported on a variety of devices, including Raspberry Pi 2, 3, 4, and 5, Raspberry Pi Compute Module 3 (CM3) and 4 (CM4), Qualcomm DragonBoard, Intel NUC, and generic x86_64, x86 KVM, and RISC-V devices.

To install Ubuntu Core 24, you’ll need at least 384MB of RAM (or 512MB if you’re using UEFI Secure Boot and Full Disk Encryption) and a minimum of 512MB of local storage. Ubuntu 24 Core is available in both Ubuntu Server and Ubuntu Desktop images, giving you flexibility depending on your needs.
