Introduction To O1 AI
O1 AI has dramatically increased the accuracy of predicting outcomes with its reasoning ability. Reasoning models like o1 or o3 provide more complete and accurate answers than standard models. But to get the output you want, you need to communicate your intent to the AI properly. Greg Brockman, one of the founders of OpenAI, shared a prompt writing formula that can help you. We’ll go into more detail about this in the next section.
According to Greg Brockman’s post on X, the o1 model is different from other chatbot models and requires a new way of writing prompts. He shared an example of a good prompt written by @benhylak:

To get better answers from o1 AI, you need to keep a few important points in mind, which we will mention in this section.
Based on the image above, your prompt should have 4 parts: 1) goal, 2) response format, 3) warnings, and 4) context. Below we explain each of these parts (note that your prompt should be written in the following order):
1) Goal: At the beginning of the prompt, clearly state your goal and what you want the AI to do for you;
For example: “I want a list of good hiking spots in San Francisco, all of which should be new, lesser-known, and interesting.”
2) Response format: Write exactly how the response format should be and what information the AI should give you.
Continuing the previous example: “Write the name of each hiking trail in a way that I can find it in the AllTrails navigation app, indicate the start and end of the hike, and write down the distance, duration, and interesting points of each trail.”
Or you can ask it to write this information in a table.
You also need to address warnings in order to get better answers from o1 AI.
3) Warnings: Give the AI a warning about exactly what to do and tell it your limitations and sensitivities.
For example: “Make sure the names of the routes you give are correct and realistic, and write the exact duration of each route.”
4) Context: The fourth thing to get better answers from o1 AI is to specify the context. You need to tell the AI your past experiences and current situation in detail so that it can better personalize its answer for you.
For example, tell me which San Francisco trails you have walked before? Which ones did you like and why? Who would you like to go with, etc. In fact, the more the AI knows about your situation, the more accurate the answer can be.
