SpaceX has announced that each of its next-generation Starlink satellites will have 1 TB/s download bandwidth, enabling it to deliver gigabit speeds to Starlink users. In its annual Starlink progress report, the space giant revealed new details about the larger, more advanced “V3” satellites it plans to put into orbit on future Starship missions. Read more about the news in this article from Orcacore.

SpaceX’s report states:

“Each V3 Starlink satellite will have a download speed of 1 terabit per second and an upload speed of 160 gigabits per second. So compared to the V2 Mini satellites, it has 10 times the download speed and 24 times the upload speed.”

The company’s V2 mini satellites currently offer only 96 Gbps of download bandwidth and were launched into space on the smaller Falcon 9 rocket. The report also notes that Starlink’s aggregate network capacity is currently close to 350 terabits per second.

Eventually, SpaceX plans to offer Starlink subscribers 1 Gbps and 2 Gbps download speeds.

As mentioned, the Next-generation Starlink satellite will have 1 TB download bandwidth. It should also be noted that each launch of Starlink V3 satellites with Starship will add 60 terabits per second to the Starlink network. This is more than 20 times the capacity that a launch of V2 Mini satellites with Falcon 9 will add.

Recently, regarding the Next-generation Starlink satellite, Michael Nichols, Starlink’s vice president of engineering, published a new post on the social network X.

He said that the V3 satellites “will allow the system to have significant scale in the most densely populated parts of the network, improve the ratio of upload to download capacity and be able to provide gigabit connectivity to individual user terminals.”

Conclusion

It’s not yet clear when Starship will begin its mission to carry Starlink satellites, but SpaceX plans to conduct another test launch on January 10. The larger, more advanced “V3” satellites will be deployed in orbit with Starship on subsequent missions to provide users with gigabit speeds.
